South Drawn finds its edge in exploring uncharted territory in contemporary lighting design. Our inspiration is sought off the beaten track, and our adventurous sense of discovery follows us all the way through the design process. Such an approach is exemplified by the nature series featuring our Hat Pendant collection.
The initial concept was dreamed up between design director Luke Mills and photographer Sam Kemp (a good friend who shares our passion for the outdoors) on a camping trip. Like most good ideas, it evolved from unlikely places, imaginative curiosity, failed attempts and serendipitous interactions that lead to eventual discovery.
You would be forgiven for assuming that the outdoor series featuring our Hat Pendant is a work of modern AI. These shots were in fact captured on film in remote natural landscapes.
What you see is the result of extensive location scouting, multiple hikes carrying camera gear and Hat Pendants, adventurously precarious prop placement, and some clever post-editing.

Material exploration is often the starting point for many of our pieces. Natural textures influenced by changing conditions and the maturing process provide an abundant source of design inspiration.

The building’s 1930s form was restored and a complementing extension, sympathetic to the original architecture, was built. With a contemporary nod to the rich equestrian history of the space, the interior achieves a classic, timeless feel with the selection of honest, tactile and enduring materials.
With the design intention and palette in place, South Drawn was engaged to design a custom lighting package that built upon the vision, creating a collection bespoke to the unique space. A number of designs were put forward and Saddle was chosen.
